Chattanooga dumpster permit rules
- Driveway or private property: the City's right-of-way permit rules don't apply. Check your HOA or lease rules.
- Street or sidewalk (City right-of-way): placing a dumpster or storage POD in the right-of-way needs a Work Zone and Dumpster Permit from the City of Chattanooga Department of Transportation (423-643-5950).
- The City asks for at least two weeks' notice for any permit that needs a traffic control plan, so it can prepare the plan and notify the public.
- The City's permit page doesn't list a fee for a short dumpster placement. Starting January 1, 2027, work zone permits that close a street, open alley or sidewalk for more than one week will be charged $100 per day for each traffic lane or sidewalk closed (City Code Sec. 32-64(e)).
- Longer-term obstructions of City right-of-way fall under a separate Temporary Use of the Right-of-Way permit (City Code Sec. 32-44), with a non-refundable $110 processing fee and typical processing of about 6 weeks.
- These rules cover the City of Chattanooga. East Ridge, Red Bank, Signal Mountain, Collegedale and unincorporated Hamilton County set their own rules.
