Birmingham dumpster permit rules
- Driveway or private property: the City's right-of-way permit rules don't apply. Check your HOA or lease rules.
- Street or sidewalk (City right-of-way): the Birmingham Department of Transportation (BDOT) requires a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Permit for any partial or full closure of a City-maintained street, sidewalk or other right-of-way, and it names placing a debris dumpster as one of the covered uses.
- Apply through the City's online permit portal (Accela). Questions go to BDOT's Design Division at 205-254-2463.
- BDOT says the application fee shown on the permit application must be paid before the application is processed. The City's permit page doesn't list the fee amount or a processing time, so ask BDOT when you apply.
- The City won't pick up construction or renovation debris left on the right-of-way. You (or your hauler) must take it to a permitted disposal or recycling facility.
- These rules cover the City of Birmingham. Hoover, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Bessemer and unincorporated Jefferson County set their own rules.
