Atlanta dumpster permit rules
- Driveway or private property: the City's dumpster permit covers the public right-of-way, so it doesn't apply to a dumpster kept fully on your own property. Check your HOA or lease rules.
- Street or sidewalk (City right-of-way): the Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) says a permit is required for all dumpsters, containers and PODS placed on the City's public right-of-way. You apply online through the City's right-of-way permit portal.
- Permit fee: a $20 fixed fee plus $10 per day for 100 feet or less of lane, $15 per day for 101 to 200 feet, $20 per day for 201 to 300 feet, and $25 per day over 300 feet. ATLDOT doesn't publish a processing time, so call 404-330-6501 before you schedule delivery.
- What the application needs: the location and a sketch showing barricades and reflectors, a certificate of liability insurance naming the City of Atlanta as certificate holder ($1,000,000 general liability, $2,000,000 aggregate, usually supplied by the dumpster company), a Certification Compliance Agreement signed by the dumpster company, and a signed, notarized affidavit with a copy of your ID. The dumpster company supplies reflectors; you supply barricades and cones.
- These rules cover the City of Atlanta. Sandy Springs, Decatur, Marietta, other cities and unincorporated parts of Fulton, DeKalb and Cobb counties set their own rules.
