Louisville dumpster permit rules
- Driveway or private property: Louisville Metro's Pod or Dumpster Permit covers the public right-of-way, so it doesn't apply to a dumpster kept fully on your own property. Check your HOA or lease rules.
- Street (Metro right-of-way): Louisville Metro Public Works issues a Pod or Dumpster Permit for placing a dumpster or pod in the public right-of-way, generally in a parking lane. Its Right-of-Way Guide says dumpsters and pods won't be permitted on sidewalks. You apply online through the Metro Business Portal with your contact details, the start and end dates, and the container type.
- Permit fee: Louisville Metro doesn't publish the Pod or Dumpster Permit fee or a processing time. The guide says a basic site inspection is included in the permit fee, and repeat or extended inspections cost $100 per hour. Check the fee in the online application before you schedule delivery.
- While it's on the street: the permit must be on site and clearly displayed at all times, or the container can be removed and you can be fined. Containers in the right-of-way need reflective material or other traffic control devices, and Public Works may require a traffic control plan. Permits aren't extended; you apply for a new one and reference the old permit number.
- These rules cover Louisville Metro Government. Some small cities inside Jefferson County and Southern Indiana towns such as Jeffersonville and New Albany may set their own rules, so check with your city.
